France Public Holidays 2013 Calendar
In France, the only public holiday by statute is la Fete du Travail or May Day observed on the first day of May. The rest of holidays are determined through the agreement between employers’ and employees’ union (convention collective) or by agreement of employer.
France observes about eleven holidays annually including international holidays (New Year’s and May Day), Christian holidays (Good Friday, Easter Monday, etc.), and national history-related holidays (Victory in Europe Day and Bastille Day).
When a public holiday in France falls on Sunday, the following Monday will be considered as a time off in lieu. However, there is no time off in lieu granted for a holiday which falls on Saturday. When a public holiday falls on Tuesday or Thursday, many businesses and stores are usually closed on Monday or Friday to create a long weekend known as “faire le pont”.
Certain numbers of holidays occur in May. Therefore, banks, museums, and stores may be closed frequently in May. Yet, a number of restaurants remain opens to respond to the market demands. It’s better for anyone visiting France in May to book restaurant or hotel in advance to make sure that he/she’ll get the accommodation well.

People in Scotland celebrate St. Andrew Day by serving traditional food, playing traditional music instruments (usually bagpipe), and dancing. There is also a superstition that girls in Scotland can predict about their marriage during St. Andrew’s Day. One way to predict their marriage is by throwing a shoe to the door. When the shoe pointing towards the exit, then the girl will marry in about one year.
The superstition about girls’ marriage does not only exist in Scotland, but also Germany, Poland, Austria, Slovakia, and some other European countries.
