Puasa 2012 / Ramadan Fasting Month 2012

Puasa or Fasting is an obligatory activity for Muslims during the month of Ramadan in Islamic lunar calendar. Literally, Puasa means refraining; in this context, Puasa or Fasting means refraining from eating, drinking, and anything that can break the fasting from dawn to sunsets.

When is Puasa 2012?
Puasa 2012 is foreseen to start on Saturday, 21 July 2012 and end on Saturday, 18 August 2012 (the whole month of Ramadan according to Islamic lunar calendar. Since the beginning and end of Ramadan are determined through moon sighting, the exact date of Puasa 2012 will be announced adjacent to the date.

Puasa in Islamic Tradition
For Muslims, Puasa or Fasting is carried out for the whole month of Ramadan and end with Hari Raya or Eid al-Fitr. Muslims must keep forbearance and refrain from eating, drinking, as well as doing and saying bad things. Puasa is meant to train the Muslims’ patience and make them do good deeds in the hope that the goodness will keep spreading for the following months after Ramadan.

In the end of Puasa, Muslims usually celebrates their victory over carnality. In some countries, the end of Ramadan (Hary Raya or Eid al-Fitr) becomes the most celebrated holidays when people decorate their houses, wear new clothes, and gather with all family members. During the last weeks of Ramadan, people in Indonesia, Malaysia, and even Singapore as well as some Muslim-majority countries crowd the stores and shopping malls to buy new clothes, shoes, or religious clothing.

The first day of Puasa is observed as a holiday in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) while the end of Puasa (Eid al-Fitr, Hari Raya) is celebrated as a major holiday in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Pakistan, and many others.
