The Canadian Formula One Grand Prix 2012 will be held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec. When the first Canadian Formula Grand Prix was held in 1967, Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, was chosen as the circuit. Due to some safety concerns in Mosport International Raceway, Canadian Grand Prix was moved to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1978 and has been holding the event since then.
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (formerly called Île Notre-Dame Circuit) has 4.361 kilometers (2.71 miles) length and 13 turns. Most tracks in the circuit are long and straight so that the racers can easily accelerate their cars to overtake the others. Yet, there are 2 sharp turns and a dangerous wall in which all of the racers must be extra-careful. The dangerous wall named Bienvenue au Québec (Welcome to Quebec) has caused many casualties. Even Formula One champions like Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, and Damon Hills have once become victims of that wall.
In 2005, Canadian F1 Grand Prix held in Circuit Gilles Villeneuve crowned as the the most watched F1 Grand Prix in the world. At that time, Canadian Grand Prix was also acknowledged as the big 3 of the most watched sporting events in the world, fell behind the Superbowl XXXIX and the final of Champions League. Three years ago, Canadian Grand Prix was not included in the Formula 1 Grand Prix schedule, but this biggest racing event in Canada was relaunched in 2010.
Ruben Barichello, once Ferrari racer, created the fastest lap record of 1:13.622 in Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2004 while Michael Schumacher achieved most wins in that circuit. The German racer won the Canadian F1 Grand Prix no less than 7 times. The first Formula One racer winning the circuit was Gilles Villeneuve, a Canadian racer, but he died during Belgian Grand Prix in 1982. To commemorate Villeneuve achievement, the circuit where Canadian F1 Grand Prix takes place was renamed as Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
