Monaco Formula One 2012 Circuit

Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix has been taking place in a street circuit called Circuit de Monaco since 1955. Mostly located in the city of Monte Carlo, some people refer to the circuit as “Monte Carlo”. It is indeed short with length only 3.340 kilometers (2.075 miles). The other Formula One circuits have about 4 or 5 kilometers length. With 78 laps, the total distance taken by the racers in Monaco F1 GP will be 260.520 km (181.667 mi) – the shortest distance among the other Formula 1 races.

The track in Circuit de Monaco is narrow with some small curvy hairpins and a tunnel. Since the road has many different elevations, the racers cannot easily handle their cars in high speed. It is extremely difficult for them to overtake each other in such a narrow road on the track, so securing best position in the qualifying section is crucial. All racers may not be as speedy as they usually do in the other circuits, but it doesn’t lessen the excitement and thumping sensation created during the Monaco F1 race.

Circuit de Monaco is considered as one of the most dangerous track holding the Formula 1 Grand Prix. There were at least 3 fatal accidents in the circuit which resulted to the death of 3 famous racers – Norman Linnecar (1948), Luigi Fagioli (1952), and Lorenzo Bandini (1967). Unless Circuit de Monaco has been acknowledged as one of F1 Grand Prix circuit for a long time already, it won’t be allowed to hold the F1 race due to safety reasons.

Circuit de Monaco is the only one that doesn’t follow the minimum race distance of 305 kilometers mandated by the F1 Officials, FIA. Besides F1 race, this Monte Carlo circuit also hold other international races such as F2, F3000, and GP2. The late Brazil racer, Ayrton Senna, keeps the record of 6 times winning in Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix while his younger rival, Michael Schumacher, created the fastest lap record of 1:14.439 in 2004.
